I think Bega's purchase of Vegemite was strategically smart as it keeps itheir foot in the door with Supermarkets to some degree. Supermarkets need to stock Vegemite (as an essential brand for a large number of consumers) and Bega can leverage that need by requiring the Supermarkets to also stock their diary products.
Costco in the USA tried to stop carrying Coca Cola only to discover it was losing customers by not having it, and went cap in hand back to Coke and asked them to supply it again.
