This is exactly what will happen if the gas cap is connected (to the saturated water body) and one thing they will be trying to prove.....it just won't take a few hundred thousand years like you suggested!

It has been mentioned earlier where the solubility of the gas will decrease when the pressure decreases.....so as they take the gas off the cap it will lower the pressure on the water body which in turn releases gas into the cap.....so the gas cap keeps getting fed as the pressure in the well decreases. There was a great post explaining this previously about similar to opening a soft drink and the CO2 bubbles releasing.

There are so many variables in determining this source capability that we are all in the dark for quite a while yet.....anything on here comparing to O&G exploration/commercialisation is way off the mark.
