This release to me is a bit vague.
In Fig. 2 They seem to compare helium concentrations with helium concentrations in the gas part of reservoirs elsewhere most of the Helium concentrations are in natural gas (hydrocarbon) reservoirs. e.g. Australia, Qatar
I don't understand how you can saturate water with an inert gas, it cant dissolve as it does not react.
My guess is that the helium is in micro-bubbles in the water, it is not 2.5% of the reservoir but 2.5% of the gas that is freed from the water when the pressure is released and the micro-bubbles expand.
So how much He is really there? I think they really need to explain this better.
Agreed that if you pump out the water from the reservoir Helium will be released and this might result in a substantial amount of Helium.
In previous reports they say there are examples in the US of this being done but I cant find any details.
