It's far from the norm but it's not really that rare, at least for a while, for small companies to run with 3.
Off the top of my head in companies I hold
ICG has 3
KTA , has 3.
MOH, currently has 4 after having 3 for it's first 2-3 years on the board
and others I have on lists are running with 4 but have had 3 for extended periods.

but this is a red herring.

I'm supportive of having a bigger board with more experience and skills. However tactically, if there's a problem with the way the vote currently flows (ie Gareth acting as a voting lackey for Ross), it's tactically better for shareholders to change the current mix to shift the balance of voting OR add 2 directors to 5 to create the same shift in voting pattern. The effect in either case, would be to make Dr West the swing vote and I would suggest that everyone here would be comfortable with that outcome as he has intensely proven his integrity.
