I really thought this part of the article was interesting:

Does anyone else think that this may have been the result of pharmaceutical bs to line their pockets.
Sounds somewhat similar to how during Hoover’s presidency Andrew Mellon, the principal financial investor became head of the treasury and appointed his nephew Anslinger to the head of Narcotics. Hemp at the time was widely used but was opposed to their financial interests so they took the Mexican word for marijuana and waged an anti-drug campaign to get rid of it, even though the most potent hemp contains less than .3% thc
