Sorry jb, but I think you are too close to the server farm to see the big picture energy savings NVM will bring.
Here's just one example from Wikipedia (and I do believe this example is very conservative).
"If non-volatile memory (NVM) could run at the same speed as DRAM does today, it would consume significantly less power than DRAM 1. This is because DRAM requires a constant supply of power to retain data, whereas NVM can retain data even when the power is turned off 2.
According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, replacing DRAM with NVM could result in up to 14 times lower energy consumption 1. However, this is a theoretical estimate and the actual power savings would depend on various factors such as the type of NVM used, the size of the memory, and the specific use case 1."
From previous research, potential energy savings from being able to put NVM adjacent to a CPU are both massive and compelling. The energy savings alone are THE KEY justification.
