In medicine looking for a particular result and finding another very worthwhile benefit isn't just a worthwhile outcome, it's pretty much the norm.
Lots of medicines are repurposed for completely different medical issues. In this particular case the statistically significant outcomes were part of the original investigation so your analogy is so far off base as to be laughable.
