The important Trans Australia Railway has been repaired between Port Augusta and Tarcoola, a major undertaking in 18 locations where flooding had occurred.
Today, the first westbound train since 21 January 2022, designated 1MP5 ('1' = day of the week, Sunday when it departed; 'M' = Melbourne, 'P' = Perth and '5' is the designated individual train number) departed Port Augusta SA at around 1230 ASDT.
An eastbound train from Perth to Melbourne is travelling where allowed at 100 kilometres an hour across the Nullarbor, making good time, and is between Haig and Loongana.
There are speed restrictions on the newly laid track (i.e. installed in the areas previously affected by flooding) which is normal on railways until the track 'settles in'.
This will slow the progress of trains on a minority of the Trans Australia Railway but if everything goes OK, the westbound train should arrive at Kewdale (Perth WA) on late Wednesday morning, 16 February. By Saturday 19, products unloaded from it should be in IGA Perth supermarkets, or with wholesalers and smaller retailers.
