Is there a reason for the forced cancelling of shares after a buyback?

Just intrigued, as I don't see why the shares can't stay on treasury and be re-issued?

The UK definitely have the better system - it keeps closed funds a lot tighter to their NTA.

Australia is replete with small, illiquid junk - which should have been wound up a decade ago.

Thankfully the ETF industry is speeding up the destruction process for closed funds. They either adapt or face no demand.
