Your assessment of many wells over a large area is spot on - and the idea of a central power station producing 250-odd MWe cannot happen.
However some kind of distributed production centres, each centred around a small number of wells, might work. These could be mini power plants supplying a local industry, small hydrogen-production hubs providing fuel to regional demand centres, or large-scale hot/cold greenhouses producing flowers or vegetables. Individually these would be fairly small but collectively they might form a significant income stream from the supply of hot water/steam plus sale of the secondary products.
