no disrespect jwt, but it's a bit better than that blackjack.

In Australia we have police 'spot checking' speed. That inevitably means that they aim there laser / lidar at a point on the road that experience tells them yields the most fines. Usually a small downhill section where drivers just let their vehicle roll a bit.

Speed enforcement like this is quite unfair and possibly unsafe.

Unfair because police can measure you at a single point in time that they might know from experience is a 'good spot'.

Unsafe because, as we all know, there is a generation of drivers being trained that drive around fixated on their speedo to ensure they NEVER EVER exceed the speed limit.

Under point to point monitoring, the vehicle goes under a reader and the the EXACT time that it passes under it is measured. It then drives under the next reader and the elapsed time can be accurately measured.

The system knows the exact distance between readers. It's simple maths then to build in a tolerance for when the tag was interrogated by the reader (maybe 10 feet or so) then calculate an average speed between the readers.

You can concentrate on driving because your speed can drift around a little, up and down, without you getting booked for that section.

For known small sections of dangerous road, all the designers have to do is shorten the distance between a set of readers thereby reducing the up and down tolerance.
