Canyon Resources hosts Minim Martap Bauxite Project site visit as PFS advances

Consultants and contractors visit project sites and transport corridors from the mine in central Cameroon to ports.

Canyon Resources Ltd (ASX:CAY) has hosted a site visit by consultants and contractors at the Minim Martap Bauxite Project in Cameroon aimed at accelerating technical and commercial elements of the project.

This visit included an inspection of the entire mine to port supply chain, including travelling on the Camrail rail line and detailed visits of Douala and Kribi ports.

It also included meetings with key members of regulatory and governing bodies and consultation with affected communities and elders and chiefs.

Visit “extremely valuable”

Canyon’s director of projects James Durrant, who hosted the site visit, said: “It was extremely valuable to host the visit which brought different groups interfacing together with the sole focus of advancing the development of this globally significant bauxite project in a responsible and efficient manner.”

Consultants and experts in attendance were selected for their expertise and ability to help expedite project development and included groups working on the project’s pre-feasibility study (PFS).

The PFS is well developed and is on track for release in the June quarter of 2020.

Guests included experts in mining, logistics, rail, port, earthworks and roadbuilding as well as social and environmental impact consultants.

Among the companies represented were Ausenco, Beacop, Earth Moving Worldwide, Mota-Engil and Environmental Social Sustainability.

Welcome gathering

The site visit included a welcome and introduction gathering at Bobodji exploration camp attended by the regional Sous-Préfet (Deputy Regional Administrator), village chiefs, elders and other local and regional government representatives.

During this gathering, the work completed to date was presented and this included the completion of a JORC 2012 mineral resource estimate, delivered within 12 months of receiving the exploration permits.

This estimate of 892 million tonnes at 45.1% Al2O3 and 2.8% SiO2 at a cut-off grade of 35% Al2O3 will underpin the PFS.

Within the large and shallow resource is a very high-grade component of 431 million tonnes at 48.8% Al2O3 and 2.8% SiO2 at a cut-off grade of 45% Al2O3.

Positive sentiment

The sentiment of those attending the site visit and meetings was overwhelmingly positive towards the project, proposed direction of the PFS and strategy for project execution.

Canyon is planning the development of the project in a two-stage, two-port execution program.

Initial production is planned to be exported through the port of Douala utilising the existing rail and port infrastructure and stage-2 is expected to unlock tonnes and reduce costs by utilising the port of Kribi.
