They have used their hard earned to buy an ownership right in the business and when they bought in the share price was such that in MOST cases what they bought was not an unmarketable parcel at the time of purchase . It became unmarketable by a decline in the share price . On the other hand they are a financial drain and administrative burden on the business and its shareholders as a whole . The ASX has rules that are obviously designed to allow companies to get as many unmarketable parcels removed as possible . But removal is not mandatory and it is not all that difficult to ensure the unmarketable parcel remains on the register . Many investors would embrace the opportunity to clean up their portfolio of shares they obviously have little faith in , but a lot would think that it is just not worth the effort to keep them .
