I'm genuinely confused - I thought the drill bits were going to be the all telling indicators and nothing else?

I'm currently playing catch up on the reading and it's like a group of boy scouts that have excitedly arrived at Jamboree; dug a hole and found a rocky bit and some discoloured clay that could be anything without testing surely?

Actual telling results are still a fair way off yes? If I recall rightly drilling was a "maybe" before the next wet season - @fooca can I have an answer on this 'immediately' please
