    From what I was told, drilling in soft rock destroys the core (it crumbles) so in order to get a solid core, they needed to slow the drill down (i assume this means not progressing as fast and taking more time, not reducing the drill turning speed - not sure of that). I expect they want a full knowledge of what they are drilling through not just the target.
