Preface that I’m probably sounding like an idiot, but I’m genuinely curious.
If you have a 1m3 box of ore, with 1% copper. You can calculate it two ways.
- Using the SG of ore (2.7), the box weights 2.7 tonnes. 1% of this is copper. Hence, 0.027 tonnes of copper.
- 1% of the box is copper, so there is 0.01m3 of copper. Using the SG of copper (8.95), there is then 0.0895 tonnes of copper.
A significant difference between the two.
