PFAS National Environmental Management Plan

A draft per-and poly-fluoralkyl substances (PFAS) National Environmental Management Plan has been released for public comment and is now available for download at www.ntepa.nt.gov.au
PFAS are of emerging global concern because they are persistent in the environment and may potentially pose a risk to human health and the environment.
Development of the draft Plan stemmed from a PFAS regulators Summit held in Melbourne earlier this year that was attended by NT EPA officers.
The summit outcomes have been used to support the development of the PFAS NEMP consultation draft, which outlines a nationally consistent approach to the environmental regulation of PFAS.
Anyone with an interest in PFAS management is urged to read through the draft plan and provide comment before the 25 September deadline.
The public are also invited to attend a presentation about the draft Plan, to be delivered by EPA Victoria at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) theatrette on 8 September 2017, starting at 10 am.
The National Chemicals Working Group of the Heads of EPAs Australia and New Zealand (HEPA) is developing the Plan in consultation with relevant Australian Government, state and territory agencies.
Key components of the draft Plan include a focus on:
· Human health
· PFAS occurrence
· Environmental and health criteria
· Contaminated sites assessment and management
· Storage and transport
· Environmental monitoring and analysis
· Stakeholder engagement, communication and data sharing
· Research, review and evaluation
Details on how to provide written feedback are also available at www.ntepa.nt.gov.au and comments received will help the development of the PFAS NEMP.
