Occasionally companies offer a buyback of unmarketable parcels (those less than $500) to save brokerage for the investor etc. The investor has to formally 'opt out' of the buyback, to retain the parcel.
I don't understand your second line - about the substantial loss. If you want to sell parcels of less than $500, you certainly can, but the brokerage starts becoming prohibitive in proporion. Is that your concern?
