I suspect the MOZ example is based on establishing yourself and your position in an adversarial environment (like prison) where it 'puts a stake in the ground' if you take out someone who is well enough respected for the victory to be considered meaningful by onlookers but not someone so powerful that any retaliation could put you in a worse position than where you started.
