"What I don't get is why did they release any statement at all? I don't recall them doing this in the past even when they had the large 2021 loss. And the sell-off was way over the top. The whole thing seems strange."
Companies are legally required to keep the market informed.
Until now all guidance has been for a profit, consistent with the previous year. The fact it will now be a loss is a very significant, material event so they legally had to inform the market. To keep it quiet and hence mislead the market would have been a breach of all director's responsibilities and leave them subject to the variety of relevant penalties if they did so.
