"Perhaps Stockman's reference was related to the desirability of an examination of ASIC's efficacy in "policing" the Australian share market. They've certainly demonstrably struggled and performed poorly with banking sector. Although that had been somewhat obvious for many years, the current inquiry has certainly demonstrated repeated malfeasance and contempt for the regulator."

Sure, but I think your point about malfeasance having "been somewhat obvious for many years" is a very distinguishing factor.

Within the banking sector, there was clear and unambiguous evidence of misconduct: the Ombudsman was receiving complaints, ASIC itself - for all its limitations - was registering it, and even the banks themselves were explicitly admitting to it, in the form of the near-$500m of remediation payments they made to clients between 2010 and 2017, all of which was reported to the Regulator.

But what similar evidence is there of misconduct or malfeasance in the Australian stock market that would justify a formal inquiry of any kind?
