So arrogance and an associated refusal to take in new information, nor engage meaningfully about that information is not a good sign.

I believe the total short position in the stock now stands at less than 10% so not really a major factor.

Not if volumes are low. If volumes are low it doesn't take much to hold down a SP. They will be low if committed investors are holding and what you see is a lot of churn of the same stocks.
