Minister for Resources and Critical Minerals
The Honourable Scott Stewart
.
- EQ Resources has been granted an Exploration Permit for Minerals (EPM) to unlock Wolfram Camp’s critical mineral potential.
- The permit supports the re-commercialisation of the historic Wolfram Camp site, aiming to boost local employment.
- Tungsten, a critical mineral essential for renewable technologies, is the primary focus of the exploration.
One of Australia’s leading tungsten producers hasbeen granted a permit to begin extensive on-ground exploration overa 480 square kilometre area in Far North Queensland.
.The EPM approval allows EQ Resources tobegin drilling, geological mapping, and soil and rocksampling aimed at unlocking tungsten resources at the site, whichincludes the former Wolfram Camp and Bamford Hill mines.
.This marks the next step inthe re-commercialisation of this historic site, furthering Queensland’scommitment to sustainable mining, economic growth and more jobs.
.Wolfram Camp is named after wolframite – animportant primary ore of tungsten which miners have been extracting from thesite since the 19th century.
.With the highest melting point and tensile strengthof all pure metals, tungsten is essential in various battery technologies andenergy storage systems. Its unique properties make it irreplaceable inapplications like solar cells, wind turbine blades, microelectronics, tools, construction, defence, and medical technologies.
.Global demand for critical minerals like tungstenwill continue to increase as more countries work towards a net zero future.
.Re-commercialisation of former mines is a keycomponent of the Miles Government’s Queensland Critical Minerals Strategy aswell as the Queensland Resources Industry Development Plan.
.Quotes attributable to the Resources and CriticalMinerals Minister Scott Stewart:
.“The approval of this exploration permit is acrucial step in our mission to transform Queensland’s former mines intoproductive, job creating assets,” he said.
.“EQ Resources has a proven track record in revitalising former mines.
.“Revitalising Wolfram Camp will not only providesignificant economic benefits but also ensures a steady supply oftungsten, critical for renewable energy technologies.
.“This will not only create more good jobs for theregion but helps us meet the challenge of leading the world towards adecarbonised future.”
.Quotes attributable to EQ Resources CEO KevinMacNeill:
.“At EQ Resources, we understand the importance ofresponsible and sustainable mining practices. As we did with the Mt CarbineMine, we are committed to engaging closely with all local communities aroundWolfram Camp to create shared prosperity and opportunities.
.“This includes generating new employment avenues, contributing to the local economy, and promoting responsible environmentalstewardship in alignment with EQR’s core values.
.“Having successfully navigated the permittingprocess, we are excited to get boots on the ground.
."Our team of experienced professionals willapply modern exploration techniques and state-of-the-art technologies tomaximise Wolfram Camp and the surrounding site's potential while minimising itsenvironmental footprint.”
