I think there is value in picking up a potentially valuable processing innovation whilst it is still cheap.
It's like obtaining a monopoly on a process that can change the game from a cost point of view.
They could not only use it on some of their product if they believed it would be more cost effective, they can also allow other players to use the technology on a contractual basis and reap in steady income streams from other sources. Diversify your income streams.
