Congratulations - you have found what mining practices were over 100 years ago, about a relevant as a model T Ford when discussing modern motor cars. All that moonscape is from smelters that were pulled down decades ago, and the "moonscape" is returning to vegetation at the moment, the brown looking creek is from oxidation of sulphides and I'm sure that another company is looking at re treating all that stuff to extract the copper and gold out of it before properly rehabilitating it to todays standards. But I bet there will be retards out the front gate of the CMT Queenstown mines in a few years protesting about the company that will be retreating waste piles and tailings from this pristine "wilderness"/legacy mining site over 100 years old.
