How does the tool work?

The tool has a probe that extends out from the tool and pushes through the mud filtrate and makes contact against the borehole wall.Formation fluid is allowed to flow through the probe and into a small pretest chamber. The pressure within the chamber is monitored as the fluid fills same. Eventually the pressure will stabilize at formation pressure...unless the formation is tight or has very low permeability. The volume of the chamber can be varied on most tools. If the station is low perm you might do a pretest with the pretest chamber at a reduced volume value.

Sampling....the formation fluid is pumped through the tool flow line via a pumpout sub(s). The fluid flows past at least one fluid analyzer that gives indications of the type of fluid. This process can often take hours. Once the analyzer indicates that the fluid has cleaned up the flow is directed to a sample chamber or bottle. The bottle once filled is sealed.
