I am a chemist so I'm kind of hung up on the semantics. Hydrocarbons are like a class of molecule consisting of hydrogen and carbon. It's not really correct to say hydrocarbons can be indicative of coal or gas in the same way it would be incorrect to say carbohydrates are indicative of a potato or sugar. They hydrocarbons don't indicate, they ARE.
