IV insertion is faster than indwelling catheter insertion which has a more involved sterile setup and greater privacy. IDC insertion also has greater risk of subsequent urinary tract infection although this would be mitigated by the very broad nature of the RCE antibiotic.
Much harder to do IV cannulation on a rat though.
