It may be that they didn't see there would be demand for the transmission detector as their key competitive advantage was the backscatter tech, with a detector on the same side at the transmitter.
Perhaps they were planning on selling the separate detector as an additional accessory - and maybe they should.
I assume transmission detectors would give better resolution than backscatter - useful in some applications.
