well you didn't mention that in 1999 NAB offer 1 share bonus for each holding shares so basically people's portfolio doubled in 1999. to be precise it was offered on 13/may/1999... IMO but you can check the record.
However on other note it is true that banks are normally dividend payers not the capital growth giver stocks. if bank stops paying dividend then certainly it will be amazon in next 10 years in term of share price... IMO.... lol ... !
