The Opportunity

Want to do petabyte scale deep learning and ship product to real customers? If so, this opportunity may be for you. At Nearmap, we're in the exciting early stages of building a data science team, and we're after a variety of roles - whether your interest is in making ML operate reliably at scale, or solving specific data science problems that enable our customers in new ways.



We have been capturing high resolution (7.5cm) aerial imagery for nearly 10 years, and now cover more than 85% of the Australian, and 65% of the US populations with regular surveys (up to 6 times a year). In addition to multiple vertical views, we capture oblique images at several angles, and have just launched our HyperCamera 2 system, which will enable city scale 3D models (meshes and point clouds) later this year.



This is a very rare opportunity to transform the product offering of an existing business with a powerful data asset, and a large network of customers who will be interested in any add-value products on top of the base imagery we currently provide. As a mature publicly listed startup, we have both the resources to allow you to succeed in your role, and the agility (thanks to cloud based infrastructure) to rapidly take advantage of the latest developments
in the field.



You will report to the Principal Data Scientist, in either Systems and Automation (if you have crossover skills with data engineering), or Machine Learning Products (if you want to build an end-to-end machine learning product from business case to customer usage).

What we want from you

We're after exceptionally talented data scientists, at all levels of experience. Whether you're a seasoned veteran with experience building conv nets in a commercial environment, or you're in the early stages of your data science career, the main attributes we're after are:

Pragmatism: While extensive knowledge of ML theory is highly valued, pragmatism wins over elaborate theory when it comes to shipping products that work

Collaboration: We believe data science is a team sport, and are after candidates who can communicate well, share knowledge, and be open to taking on ideas from anyone in the team. Having worked on shared code-bases in a commercial environment is a big plus, but it's the attitude that matters most

Technical Skills: A decent base of python and linux are key to a role in the team. Other than that, we're pretty flexible - we know tools are changing rapidly, and will continue to do so for many years to come. Experience with tools like Docker, Keras, Tensorflow etc. are highly valued, but not mandatory

Education and Experience: The minimum experience we are interested in at the moment is a technical bachelors level degree (engineering, sciences, etc.), with a few years of experience (commercial or research). We are also very interested in mid to senior level data scientists/machine learning engineers who have more substantial experience to contribute to the team
