I think they are being misled, in that they don't understand the amount of money they are throwing around will attract yes men like moths to a light. If they were really serious about what they were doing they should have a balanced team of advisors on the books to ensure good decision-making and to weed out the money chasers.
I've not been impressed at all by the rush to turn off coal and like when there is no viable alternative. Yes, you could all go solar at some time point, but it will take years to get to that and a mountain range of money with no sign of anything profitable or truly long-lived at the end.
To me, it ain't renewable if you need to keep replacing it every 15 years or so (panels/turbines break, inverters fail, batteries conk out, etc) - solutions that last 30 years plus and are designed to be easily repairable at a low-cost point should be the only things considered - you won't get that without real standards and businesses will claim its anti-competitive, erm.
I fear this is all going to be a big exercise in 'I told you so' at the expense of our future. A classic demonstration that if you distort the market you get a distorted result that is nothing like what you expected. The law of unintended consequences at work.
Going back to the stock, I think the super profits tax will fizzle out, they do not want to be taxing their state mates. It looks like the coal price is coming back. The weather seems good. I suspect we are on track for a much bigger dividend with more stock buy backs. As always DYOR.
