Air core drilling is defining the geochem footprint.
The truth is that Mafic and ultra mafic rocks will break down/oxidise quickly if exposed to air and ground water. This makes them largely buried deposits and hence there will be indicators with in the regolith that is what the air core is targeting. It’s cheap, it defines the likely footprint of the shallow portions of the underlying deposit.
