But a reckoning is coming, with the chief executive of ASX-listed Bubs Australia, Nicholas Simms, saying there are industry predictions that the number of infant formula brands in China may fall of a cliff.

"The estimates are the number of infant formula brands will reduce from approximately 2500 to circa 300," he said.

But the higher-quality and higher-profile Australian brands were in a stronger position than those being produced in other countries because under the regulatory regime, there are 13 facilities in Australia with separate CNCA approval, which in practical terms means there are 39 "brand slots" for Australian brands potentially available to companies going through the China FDA registration process. Under the China FDA rules, a maximum of three infant formula brands are able to come out of any one approved manufacturing facility.
