Sodium batteries aren't new technology, they were invented in 1807 by Sir Humphry Davy. So far, they have been the also-ran option and have near zero market share. They do have potential for stationary storage, along with LFP batteries and technologies like vanadium flow batteries. Despite this potential its unclear if they will get the critical mass to get production unit costs down enough to even stay in the competition game.
Altech notes their main objective is planning, design and construction of a 0.12GWh plant (aka 120MWh plant). As per the article below, Tesla wasn't just planning to make Megapack stationary storage units but deployed 6.9GWh of capacity in the 3rd quarter (6,900MWh). Tesla is currently producing at over 200x the capacity that this proposed German plant has. The California plant made more in a week than the German plant will make in a year.
Telsa is noting that it won't be long before they are shipping 100GWh or slightly under 1,000x the capacity that this German plant is being designed around.
Who is going to have the economies of scale? A tiny little German plant still in the design phase or Tesla who is already producing >200x their design capacity?
