This is an older article but quite good about explaining how the bots manipulate the market. I haven't really looked into which side of the trade they are on in CXO but that will be the tell of what outcome they are after. With Algorithmic trading they don't always have to pay the usual transaction fee retail investors get stung with and can be based on a daily fee.
If you want to see some real serious algorithmic trading in action get a crypto exchange account, looks like pretty much all bots at work.
