I think the older generation can reference a body of knowledge and experience. No one is free from not using their brains (IQ) and interpersonal/emotional skills (EQ). The cream rises.
We are the lucky country because we are sheltered in so many ways. Compared to what used to be called 'third world' countries, where they live by their wits (and will/would eat our lunch). Scams are just the most obvious examples. Along with that, "virtue is its own reward". I can tell you I've been incredibly lucky, including to never have been in a war*. However, I'm still like an old card with lots of dents and bruises in it. In fact, I'm using some of my NWC profits to spruce mine up, which has just crossed 200,000km. What a ridiculous thing to be proud of.
