    open pit still suits the steeper dipping ore bodies, strip ratio will usually be higher though - need to remove more waste either side of the ore to allow you to get down deep enough. the deeper you go, the wider you need to make your pit.
    at a certain point the economics won't stack up for open pit and in that case a switch to underground mining may be more viable. depends on the deposit style, costs, size etc of course. a long way to go for both KAL and ORD before it hits this stage
