Around 45 million tons of ammonia (22% of production) is transported via various modalities, both domestically and internationally. Scale-up of ammonia trade is expected due to the adoption of low-emission ammonia as zero-carbon fuel and hydrogen carrier, as well as the adoption of low-emission ammonia in existing markets. International transport typically occurs via ocean going vessels. Inland transport occurs via barges on rivers, via pipelines, via rail tank cars (RTCs) on rail, or via trucks on highways. Most of the ammonia is transported internationally via ocean-going vessels, around 17-20 million tons of ammonia every year, with trade about constant over the past 20 years. The existing ammonia fleet consists of around 81 vessels, with most vessels in the MGC class (Midsize Gas Carrier, around 37,000 m3 or 25.2 kT). However, around 508 ocean-going vessels are capable of carrying ammonia, although most of these vessels carry LPG. Therefore, ammonia trade can expand significantly with existing vessels in the near term.
️ Barges are used for ammonia transport inland via rivers. Typical ammonia capacities are 500-3,000 tons of ammonia. Over a 100 barges transport ammonia inland via rivers and canals, with a significantly higher number capable of transporting ammonia (currently carrying LPG).
Large volume, long-distance inland ammonia transportation can be performed by liquid pipelines. Liquid ammonia is typically pressurized and transported in low alloy carbon steel pipelines. Short-distance ammonia transportation via pipeline also occurs under refrigerated conditions. The United States has an operational ammonia pipeline, connecting seven states in the US Midwest (1.5 MTPA). Mexico also operates an ammonia pipeline, to connect the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. New ammonia pipelines are considered in China and Northern Europe. See alsohttps://lnkd.in/ec4pFjtQ
Ammonia for rail transport is stored in rail tank cars (RTCs), at temperatures above 5°C and at pressurized conditions. A typical train with 20 rail tank cars transports around 1,000 tons of ammonia. In Europe, around 1.5 million tons of ammonia is transported by rail every year.
Ammonia transport via trucks is mainly used for short distances, typically below 150 kilometers, for last mile distribution. Ammonia transport trucks consist of a tractor and a detachable trailer, carrying around 15 to 18 tons of ammonia. Truck-to-ship transfer is a new use of ammonia transport via trucks, see alsohttps://lnkd.in/evtFYbhE
