    You ask where the diamonds are coming from. The announcement says from "the hot spring gravels".

    So presumably they were carried up as the spring discharged deposits in antiquity.

    Where does the spring get the diamonds from?
    Not from a kimberlite pipe. There are none in the area.

    Some time ago I read a paper on how diamonds in this region were formed. I don't have the reference now, I fear.

    The general theory was that the diamonds were formed when two continental plates collided, the one that overrode the other forming diamonds from carbonaceous matter. The collision generated enormous friction, therefore heat and pressure, hence the diamonds.

    So the question is this. How far below the surface is the ancient collision zone?
