The rate of recovery seems to be increasing. My reading on this is that they are treating the old mines like an archaeologist would treat a dig - using stratification to get a focus on where the diamonds are coming from.
Now they know they come from the 'hot spring gravels'.
The next job is to find how far down the hot spring gravels pick up the diamonds - though I suppose they could pick them up horizontally from some zone buried in a hillside.
I get an impression that the company has an intelligent strategy in place at the site of the old mine. That's why I didn't laugh at the shovel. A 360 degree excavator might have destroyed the stratigraphic evidence.
