For most of his life, Asculpeous studied under Miss Apprehension and has been trying to make up for it since!
Probably like yourself, would be wary of anyone who claimed to be ethical.Yes,decent is a great term.The ultimate descriptor is "Good" which according to some is the full expression of knowledge and understanding.

It is very difficult to perceive when you are being lied to at close quarters.Suspect that some actually believe what they are saying and hence none of the clues like tics etc.....easier with politicians- it's when the lips move!
