Instant messaging will still be a key component of uptake for this product IMO. WP needs to be a complete communication tool, rather than a calling device, else it faces the danger of falling by the wayside.
Imagine using WP to message, make calls, and potentially share photos and files, as opposed to using WP in combination with other apps. Calling drives revenue but added features will drive user adoption and retention.
