I’m not a shorter but if a 1/3 of short positions closed their position doesn’t it mean that they bought last Monday rather than sold ? To close a short position I believe you have to buy. When you start a short position you “borrow” shares and sell them only to buy them back when you close your position. The aim for shorters is to buy back shares at a lower price to what they sold the borrowed shares. That’s my understanding anyway.
