Bridget Carter of Data Room writes in 'The Oz' this morning, but stranegly omits "who" these alleged other investors are:

"A group of local and offshore infrastructure investors are believed to be weighing a consortium bid for the troubled Basslink interconnector.

Basslink – an undersea cable connecting power between Tasmania and the mainland – collapsed into the hands of receivers in November.

This was at a time the Tasmanian government and Hydro Tasmania had claimed damages worth $105.3m from an outage of the power and internet connection with the mainland in 2015.

Basslink’s overall debt is understood to be close to $626m.

DataRoom has learned that receivers for the asset will run a sales process that is likely to unfold in January or February.

The plan is said to be one where Basslink is transformed into a regulated asset to make it more attractive to suitors after it was at one time thought to be worth about $1bn.

Already, the Australian listed gas pipeline owner APA Group has shown its hand with respect to the interconnector by acquiring a $99m loan from MUFG for 95c in the dollar.

It was also earlier in exclusive talks to buy the interconnector.

However, sources say that major global and local infrastructure funds have a cheaper cost of capital than APA and could easily give the suitor a run for its money.

Key to a successful deal is likely to be the ability of a buyer to win over the Tasmanian government, which could provide the approval needed to improve the asset’s value..."
