@ dubkin - the quote feature doesn't see to be working for my post at the moment - My thoughts in relation to your article post
-----------------------------------
Question is with the headlong rush by our governments to create an unreliable expensive energy infrastructure how are all the EVs going to be charged in suburban areas let alone on remote mining sites. California not that long ago was asking EV owners not to charge their vehicles during a particularly high energy demand period.
At a remote mine site they are going to need to establish some sort of power generating capacity for the power required no doubt far greater than what they have in place at the moment, if solar a lot of solar panels, storage capacity for the power as the trucks presumably will need to be charged at night and given the significant power requirements for the huge trucks they use the massive power drains are going to degrade current technology batteries far faster than for normal consumer vehicles. It is difficult to see any benefit to electrifying the mining vehicles / trucks under the current technology right now - the huge costs of setting up the infrastructure and obtaining the vehicles would surely make the financial evaluation fall firmly into the continuance of diesel power - and the C02 savings would be negligible.
EVs will have a place in society particularly in an urban environment (assuming we get power generation/storage issues fixed) - but it is difficult to see with the current technology how heavy machinery/ transport will cost effectively make the transition right now.
The EU are currently debating stepping back from their 100% EV stance and considering bio fuels as an acceptable "green" alternative alongside EVs. Presumably there is a lot of lobbying by all the induustries operating in the ICE world in relation to this.
Technology is changing rapidly - Toyota announced a solid state battery they are working on promising a 10 minute charge and up to 1000km range - these are the sort of technolodies that will usher in new more practical EVs and likely with volume make the capital purchase comparable to what consumers are paying for ICE vehicles now.
Nickel seems to continue to feature in many of the new battery based technologies.
