Not free shares exactly, he will still have to pay the exercise price on them. I suppose it doesn't make a huge difference but I still probably would have preferred if these were actually attached to a performance measure rather than just gifted. i.e. 5,000,000 options at 10c when the SP has remained above 10c for 7 or 14 consecutive days. I realise he wouldn't bother converting these until the SP was steadily above this price anyway but imo it still reads better if he's got to work for them than having the option anytime he likes.
