To answer your question I would put it thus:
In order to get a stock at a good investment value (cheap) there has to be some perceived problem either with the individual stock, sector or market in general. So if you have a long time horizon you need to assess the facts and make a decision that may be contrary to the market. If you get it right that is where the big gains are.
