I don't assume that he's lying. But I do think he has reverted back to salesman mode.
In the interview immediately following the last terrible raise he was sombre and humbled.
Since then, he has regrouped and taken the time to contruct a new sales pitch, which he is now delivering with his customary demeanour.
My tip - watch for the forced smiles. The fixed expression. The little chuckles to self. These are his give-aways. These areas where he lacks confidence
