It was actually something made up by a psychologist who in fact had never spoken to or interacted with the hostages of the bank robbery in Stockholm, in order to conveniently explain why it was that a hostage acted in a particular way in that situation. It has never actually been formally diagnosed or recognised outside of the infamous bank robbery.

there's a good documentary on it which interviews various people involved, including the hostage about whom the 'syndrome' was coined. I highly recommend viewing. Should make for a fun weekend activity
